Playground with musical instruments creates inclusive communities
In the Special Kindergarten Platanhaven, music is used as a tool to create inclusive communities where everyone can participate on an equal footing. The outdoor musical instruments on the playground bring the children together around a common activity that promotes their development and gives them a common language. This creates a unique space where every child can feel seen, heard and appreciated.
Charlotte Madsen, manager of Platanhaven, highlights the importance of accessibility: “It is really important that accessibility is top notch, otherwise the instruments will not be used.” To ensure this, the instruments are installed so that they can be used by everyone, regardless of motor challenges. The instruments are brightly colored and placed at eye level, making them easy to discover and use, even for children with impaired vision.
Music as a Pedagogical Tool
"I use music as a pedagogical tool and to create joy among the children. We build a culture with a community where everyone can participate without preconditions," says Bente Gliese, music educator from Odense Music School.
The music playground functions as a learning environment that supports well-being, play and development, while also providing space for peace and reflection. The educators are aware of creating the right framework for when and how the children need breaks from the community. The music helps the children express their wishes and needs and gives them opportunities to act in their encounters with others.
